The QUALCOMM Institute for Innovation and Educational Success at SDSU was established in 2004 through a $14.5 million gift from QUALCOMM. Its primary objective is to identify and address major issues critical to the long-term prosperity of the San Diego region.

The Institute focuses on four key initiatives, three aimed at developing a more technologically proficient workforce via enhanced mathematics and technical education, and another which creates a Center focused on partnering with urban school districts to improve student performance. The Initiatives
include:

  • ISAM (Improving Student Achievement in Mathematics) aims to improve public school mathematics instruction by enhancing teachers' subject knowledge and instructional effectiveness.
  • PLTW (Project Lead The Way) trains middle and high school teachers to implement problem-based, pre-engineering coursework into their classes and enhances student interest in pursuing engineering majors in college.
  • pICT (People, Information and Communication Technologies) is an interdisciplinary program, integrated across SDSU's curriculum, in order to boost our graduates' abilities to apply advanced information technology and work in collaborative decision-making environments.
  • NCUST (The National Center for Urban School Transformation) will work to enable public schools to address the breadth of issues present in urban classrooms and communities while also serving as a catalyst to support transformation in these schools across the nation.

San Diego State University will raise matching funds for each of these initiatives from corporations, foundations and individuals.
