I am pleased to announce the inaugural group of winners of The President’s Leadership Fund Awards for Faculty and Staff Excellence.
Shawn Flanigan, Assistant Professor, School of Public Affairs,
for her research on the methods terrorist organizations use to recruit members and raise funds, and on how to use this knowledge to inform public policy
Bill Lekas, Campus Energy Manager, Physical Plant,
for his accomplishments in energy efficiency and renewable energy, making our campus a recognized leader in energy management and sustainability
Seth Mallios, Chair, Department of Anthropology,
for leading archaeological projects that expand the community’s understanding of San Diego’s history and engage students in important research
William Tong, Distinguished Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry,
for his work in developing laser methods that detect and identify biological and chemical contaminants, which has implications for homeland security, early disease detection, environmental monitoring and more
Julio Valdes, Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environment Engineering,
for conducting ground-breaking research in granular systems while engaging the community and students through programs like Engineering without Borders and the SDSU Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
These five recipients were chosen by a small group of partners in The President's Leadership Fund from a pool of over 50 nominations. In addition to recognition for being stellar contributors to San Diego State, each will receive a $5,000 grant with only one restriction—it must be re-invested in their important work for San Diego State.
These recipients exemplify the innovation and excellence The President's Leadership Fund was created to support. They each advance our university through contributions that enrich the student experience and deepen our engagement with our community. With this recognition, we applaud their work in building new partnerships around the world and attracting talent and resources to our emerging urban research university.
Please watch for upcoming monthly emails that will include profiles on these winners and their tremendous work.
I would like to extend my appreciation to our PLF partners who served on the selection committee: Jeff Byroads, Bill Fanning, Lynne Martin and Don and Diane Wozniak. These partners devoted a significant amount of their time to this process and did an excellent job in selecting recipients who represent the best of SDSU.
And finally, thank you PLF donors for making these awards and our other investments possible through your generosity.
President Stephen L. Weber
