Giving to the College of Sciences

Dean Stanley Maloy

Our College
The College of Sciences at SDSU trains more scientists than any other institution in the San Diego region, and is committed to serving the diverse population representative of the local community. The college includes eight departments and several interdisciplinary programs, offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, as well as programs for pre-professional students in medicine, veterinary medicine, and dentistry. Our curriculum provides a strong foundation of scientific knowledge, critical thinking, and practical experience in the laboratory and field. As leading researchers in their disciplines, our faculty integrate recent scientific discoveries into the classroom, and give students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working closely with a faculty member on research projects. The college also maintains the Mt. Laguna Observatory where astronomy students can access modern telescopes, the Coastal Waters Laboratory and four ecological research stations where students can gain field experiences in biology, geology, and other disciplines.

Our Vision
The goals of the College of Sciences are to contribute to scientific knowledge in ways that have important local and global impacts, to train scientists who possess a fundamental understanding of their fields and the expertise needed for future careers in local and regional industries or graduate and professional programs, to improve the training of future mathematics and science teachers, and to ensure scientific literacy of all SDSU graduates. The college will continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of students, the local community, and society in the future.

Our Fundraising Focus

  • BioScience Center: The BioScience Center occupies a $14 million, 33,000 square foot building where scientists focus on how infections caused by bacteria and viruses cause heart disease in humans. This knowledge will be used to develop new therapies and public health approaches to prevent these illnesses. Three floors of the building are currently occupied by scientists, but two additional floors are not yet finished. Philanthropic support will allow us to complete construction of the building, and will promote this important new area of biomedical research.
  • Coastal Waters Laboratory:The San Diego Bay and local beaches are now among the most polluted in the country. The new Coastal Waters Laboratory on San Diego Bay (at the site of the former Naval Training Center) will focus on solving these problems. This laboratory will provide research and teaching facilities for the study of coastal ecology and marine life. Philanthropic support will provided needed funds to speed the process from research to solution.
  • Mt. Laguna Observatory: Operated by the SDSU Astronomy Department, the observatory is one of the best dark sky astronomical viewing sites in the United States, providing an internationally recognized teaching and research facility. We have the opportunity to add a $7 million, 96 inch robotic telescope that will be a major component of a world-wide system of robotic telescopes, providing important new insights into outer space.

Our Request to You
Our college builds its scientific reputation and remains solvent largely from research funding. Yet as the demand for our graduates rises, the effectiveness and productivity of our education and research programs is hindered by limited space and equipment. While the state partially supports our university’s basic teaching mission, it does not fund the more costly activities that enrich our students’ educations or enable research or doctoral training. In order to support these vital endeavors, we rely on federal and state granting agencies and private and corporate donors. Your support will help to enable whether SDSU's College of Sciences continue our tradition.
