Giving to the College of Engineering

Dean David T. Hayhurst

Our College
SDSU’s College of Engineering educates the workforce essential to the success of San Diego’s technology and defense-based economy. In fact, it is estimated that half of our city’s engineers are alumni of our college, making our graduates vital contributors to San Diego's prosperity. Established in 1961, our college offers ABET-accredited programs in aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering and mechanical engineering. In addition, we have created a new undergraduate program in construction engineering and a master's in bioengineering and engineering management. Because of our close ties with regional industry, our college offers life-long learning opportunities for the professional engineering community, and we emphasize scholarly research in areas affecting Southern California.

Our Vision
Our college's primary objectives are to provide students with a quality undergraduate and graduate engineering education; prepare graduates for professional careers and life-long learning; promote the creation and dissemination of knowledge; serve society through professional practice and community outreach; and act as a catalyst for the technological development of the San Diego region.

Our Fundraising Focus

  • New Engineering Facility: Our college is planning to build a new facility that will promote excellence in teaching and research. In addition to planning and construction costs, we must also equip the facility with state-of-the-art laboratory and teaching equipment will be of equal importance.
  • The J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering & Management Program: With these new programs, SDSU will graduate the most advanced construction engineers and managers in San Diego. In addition, the research and training which is a key component of this initiative will enable local builders to construct better, cheaper and safer buildings, schools and homes more quickly.
  • Faculty Support: Talented and highly qualified engineering professors are the foundation of our college. State funding alone fails to provide the necessary resources to attract and retain the caliber of faculty who inspire our future leaders and workforce. With a significant percentage of our faculty retiring within the next decade, endowments to support professorships are imperative for us to continue to meet the needs of future students.
  • Student Support: Our college currently administers several important programs to help engineering students succeed. Through outreach activities such as the MESA Engineering Program and Project Lead the Way, as well as student internships and scholarship endowments, we offer our students the academic assistance and financial support they need to achieve their aspirations.
Our Request to You
Without the support of generous donors like you, we could not fund the innovative initiatives which support student and faculty excellence. In order to move forward with our strategic vision of transforming the college, we must raise more than a million dollars in private funding this year. Your donation, no matter what size, will help us realize this goal.
