Giving Opportunities Gifts to SDSU can take the form of general support or be designated to support the college or program of your choice. General donations give the university the greatest flexibility to meet its most pressing needs and promising opportunities. If you wish to designate your gift to a specific program, department or priority, please indicate this when making your gift. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your options for giving, please call (619) 594-2874.
Gifts of Cash Donating cash is the
simplest and most direct way to give to SDSU, and the contributions
are fully deductible for individuals who itemize on their federal
income tax return. Most alumni and friends participate in SDSU's
Annual Fund with gifts of cash. These benefactors enjoy seeing the
immediate results of their generosity through flourishing university
programs, and they understand the importance of their annual support.
Gifts can be made online, or by sending a check to The Campanile
Foundation located at 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, California
92182-8045.
Development officers are available in each of the
academic areas of the university to assist you in determining the
best way for you to give to the university. To find the right person
in your area of interest, please see the development
staff directory. For general questions about gifts, e-mail
gifts@sdsu.edu and you
will receive a prompt response.
Gift Pledges A pledge is a formal
statement of your intention to make a gift to SDSU. It may be followed
by an immediate gift, or may simply confirm your intention to make
a gift in the future. Many donors choose to complete their gift
pledge by making regular payments over a period of time, thereby
allowing donors to give more generously than they may have originally
considered. Whenever possible, The Campanile Foundation encourages
full payment of pledges within five years of their original commitment.
Online Giving Now you can make a
gift using your credit card through our secure
Web site.
Planned Giving You may wish to retain
an interest in your gift, such as the right to receive income from
it, or give through your estate. Under certain circumstances, your
gift may entitle you to tax benefits. Gifts to support SDSU may
be made payable to The Campanile Foundation, a nonprofit, public
benefit corporation that accepts and administers private support
for the university. Click here
for more information about planned giving.
Named Gift Opportunities SDSU is
pleased to offer a wide range of commemorative gift alternatives
for donors who wish to establish enduring tributes or permanent
memorials to individuals, families or organizations.
Memorial and Honor Gifts Many opportunities
exist to make gifts to the university in memory of honor of a loved
one or a friend. These gifts are recognized in various facilities
throughout our campus.
Gifts of Endowment A gift for endowment
demonstrates your long-term commitment to the university. An endowment
is a fund that is maintained in perpetuity, and only a portion of
the annual investment return is used for the purposes specified
by the donor. The rest of the investment yield is returned to the
principle. Thus, over the years, the fund can grow, and hopefully,
keep pace with inflation. Such endowments, which typically bear
the name of the donor(s), reflect your interests and serve as an
enduring testament to your generosity.
Matching Gift Opportunities Another
method of increasing your gifts to the institution is through a
corporate matching gift. As a benefit to its employees, companies match charitable donations to certain types of organizations,
such as higher education. Depending on the companys program,
not only cash gifts, but also other gift types such as life insurance,
deferred gifts, gifts-in-kind, securities and volunteer time may
also be eligible for corporate matching.
Gifts-in-Kind Through gifts-in-kind,
a donor can help the university strengthen its programs and improve
its facilities so that we can offer the best possible educational
experience to our students. A gift-in-kind is a tangible item or
product, which once donated can either be used by the university
or sold to an outside party (where proceeds are then applied to
philanthropic programs). Unlike gifts of cash and securities, such
gifts allow a donor to receive the benefit or charitable contribution
without drawing on cash flow and cash reserves. They also provide
the university substantial value.
Giving Anonymously Occasionally a
donor wishes to make a gift anonymously or does not want to receive
public recognition for a gift. You may request several levels of
anonymity. If you desire complete anonymity, you may make a gift
through a third party to ensure your name will not be tied to the
contribution. If you simply want to avoid public notice of your
gift, we will honor that wish by not printing your name in any published
donor listings or news releases. Please advice us of your preferences
or concerns; we will make every effort to honor your wishes.
Donor Consent The university
is grateful for the support it receives from alumni, parents and
friends. One of the ways we express our appreciation is by listing
the name of the donors in various publications. If you do not want
your name to appear in writing, please indicate your wish on the
online donation form.
Donations are processed through The Campanile Foundation, a nonprofit organization that manages the philanthropic assets of the university. Given its nonprofit status, most gifts qualify for a federal, and often state, income-tax charitable deduction. As with all financial considerations, we encourage you to discuss potential tax advantages and other implications of charitable giving with your attorney, tax advisor or financial consultant.
