Budget
Q. What will the budget cut to the SDSU campus be as part of the systemwide cut? (Across the CSU system, campuses will be asked to reduce their budgets by a total of $281 million.)
A. SDSU expects to cut approximately $30 million after including the revenue from increased student tuition fees approved for fiscal year 2011-12. This is on top of the more than $36 million that has been cut over the previous three years.
Q. How would enrollment be impacted if the tax extensions aren’t passed and additional cuts are passed on to the CSU/SDSU?
A. It would be devastating if the tax extensions aren’t passed. Should future enrollment reductions be required, it would likely impact students applying for the 2012-13 academic year. Again, considering the budget cuts and reduced enrollment for 2011-12, SDSU does not anticipate having a spring 2012 application cycle.
Q. How else would the campus be impacted should the tax extensions not pass and additional cuts are passed on to the CSU/SDSU?
A. Again, should the budget cuts increase or even double as the CSU has warned, it would have a devastating effect on the university and the CSU. There are no good plans to deal with a cut of that size and it would severely affect access and quality across the system. Under this scenario, SDSU will do its best with available resources. Our highest budget priorities include providing students with the courses they need to graduate and protecting the jobs of our valued employees.
Enrollment
Q. How will future enrollment at SDSU be impacted by the systemwide enrollment reduction?
A. The CSU’s budget reduction numbers were formally released shortly after the enrollment targets were assigned to individual campuses. Therefore, our enrollment target took this into consideration. We are committed to enrolling the same number of students this fall as last.
Q. Why will SDSU enroll the same number of students this fall as last considering the system announced it would cut 10,000 enrollment slots systemwide?
A. The CSU increased enrollment targets for the spring 2011 semester after receiving an influx of funds for enrollment and base budget restoration. While SDSU enrolled a record 4,000 new undergraduate students this spring, we were still underenrolled relative to our budgeted target. Therefore, the cut we will have to take this fall will not be as significant as might have been otherwise. Given current budget projections and our expectation that we will meet the enrollment target this fall, SDSU does not anticipate having a spring 2012 application cycle.
Employees
Q. What personnel reductions are being made at SDSU as a result of the budget reduction?
A. SDSU will continue the practice of leaving most open positions unfilled and only filling critical positions. In addition, part-time and temporary positions may not be renewed.
Fee Increase
Q. Will there be additional student tuition fee increases?
A. At this time, the CSU has said that there will not be any additional tuition fee increases aside from the ones passed last year (a 5 percent increase in spring 2011 and another 10 percent increase in fall 2011). Should additional budgets cuts come as a result of the tax extensions not being passed, the CSU has said there could be an additional tuition fee increase. The Legislative Analyst’s Office has said that increase could be at least 10 percent per year.
